The cigar, among smokers, has a different taste, fragrance and flavors that are intense and diversified than regular cigarettes. Before buying cigars, several issues should be considered.

The first step for an aspiring cigar smoker is choosing the right cigar. The local cigar distributor should be able to offer a first choice. As a beginner, it's a good idea to buy individual pieces of different brand to try this, instead of buying a box of the same type. Beginners are advised to start with a mild cigar, as a cigar that has a full-bodied flavor, for a new entrant is too strong and likely to be perceived as poor. A mild cigar is often the better choice, so that one can ensure not to ruin an expensive one by committing errors when lighting or trimming.

Once you have decided on the type and brand of cigar, you should inspect it. By gentle pressure on the cigar you can tell if there are any hard or too soft spots. This avoids the purchase of a cigar which is blocked and therefore cannot be smoked. Then, the shell of the cigar, the so-called wrappers, is regularly checked for cracks and discoloration. If no humidor is available at home, then it's better just to buy a few that can be consumed in the next few days as they dry out. A cigar that is stored in an aluminum shell, holds a little longer, even without a humidor.

The closed end or head of a cigar is the end that put into your mouth, but you have to cut it first. A cigar should be cut immediately prior to smoking. There are three types of cuts, and several types of knives: the straight cut with a cigar cutter is the most common method. The cigar is placed in the cutter and cut off with pressure on the knife. If the head of the cigar is shaped like a cone, then the pattern should be on the cone and not above the widest part of the cigar. Under no circumstances should the cut be made on the body of the cigar. This could damage the wrapper that prevents the smoke from escaping.
